Welcome to the first installment of Downtown Destination!
In this series i’ll be taking you to all of my favorite beauty destinations in downtown Manhattan. Now, I live in the Lower East Side, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t great beauty uptown. We’ll just save those for another time.
This week we’re at the Bite Beauty Lab in Soho where I made a custom lipstick. They’re a smaller company from Toronto that focus completely on lips. All of their products are food grade which means they’re good enough to eat. But don’t. I found out about this place through my friend Brooklyn who actually works there. He makes lipsticks. Umm, coolest job ever. Besides making custom lipsticks, they also stock their full range in the shop.
So I say come with a certain color in mind or a discontinued lipstick that you’re dying to have again. Don’t drive sales associates crazy. I always go for either a nude or an orangey-red (blog post coming soon about my favorite orangey-reds!) kind of like Bite’s Zinfandel.
You first sit down with an artist and tell them what you’re looking for while they whip up a batch from some samples that they have. Be sure to keep trying as you go, they’re professionals so most likely it shouldn’t take more than 2 or 3 tries to get your perfect color. Next you move on to texture. They have a bunch of different textures ranging from a gorgeous, comfortable matte to sheer. Side note: I always go matte. I just don’t get the point of having a sheer lipstick. Then you choose your scent. That ranges from unscented, lavender, mint, and some sort of fruits. I chose mint because..why not?!
After you decide that this is the shade you’ve been missing in your life (even though you probably have five more of the same exact one at home) that’s when your artist mixes it up and pours it into the mold. It sits on this freezing cold contraption for exactly 5 minutes until it’s all ready to be put into a bullet and onto your lips!
Isn’t he gorgeous?! My custom formula is 1/2 Zinfandel, 1/2 Sherry, 1/8 Yellow, and 1/2 Chestnut. I love it.
If you go, be sure to ask for my friend Brooklyn. Open Tuesday-Sunday (Closed Mondays!) this is a true downtown beauty experience. Enjoy.
